"Girls" actress Zosia Mamet has been cast as Patti Smith in Mapplethorpe, an upcoming biopic about the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, as Deadline reports. Mapplethorpe will be portrayed by Matt Smith, who's most notable for starring in "Doctor Who." The movie will be written and directed by Ondi Timoner (Dig!).
The Mapplethorpe Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that represents Mapplethorpe's work, is backing the project. Filming will begin this summer.
Smith and Mapplethorpe were involved for many years, both romantically and as friends. Their relationship was portrayed in Smith's memoir, Just Kids, which won a National Book Award in 2010.
Separately, Just Kids is currently being adapted into a Showtime series. Smith is co-writing that project.
