Cleaning upholstery is part of regular household cleaning and maintenance. Check out these 3 tips which will help you to freshen up your upholstered furniture.
Preventative Measures
If your upholstery starts to look dingy, or has developed lots of stains and spots, before you do anything else it is important to vacuum it. This will remove the dirt and dust which, when wet, can further dirty your couch if it is not removed first. Use an upholstery attachment to get in all the cracks and crevices, and to thoroughly clean all the cushions.
In addition, remove as much pet hair as possible. If a vacuum itself does not seem to get it all, try a pet hair remover. Source: Stain-Removal-101.com
First-aid for Stains
The first rule of tending to a spill? Get to it quickly before it has time to set. Use a blotting motion with either a paper towel or clean white cloth. Rubbing can smudge the spill into a larger stain – an effect that upholstery cleaning pros call “blossoming”. Work from the outside of the spot towards the Centre. Blot dry.
If blotting hasn’t done the trick and a cleaning solution is required, take a moment to examine the manufacturer’s care label, usually located under the chair seat or inside a cushion cover. Here, you’ll find instructions as to which types of products can be used in the cleaning of the fabric: W for water-based cleaners, S for solvents, WS for either, and X for none of the above – in which case, vacuuming is your only option. Note that many grease or oil-based stains (gravy, butter, cosmetics) are only treatable with dry cleaning solvents. Source: StyleAtHome.com
Deep Cleaning
Dip a sponge into the detergent mixture and rub some of it onto the back or underside of the upholstery – somewhere where it is not likely to be seen. Wipe the spot dry with a cloth and then let it air dry completely. If any discoloration occurs, don’t use the detergent mixture. Consider instead having the furniture cleaned professionally.
Use a sponge to rub the mixture into the furniture. Wipe the upholstery dry with a cloth as you work. Allow the detergent to sit and penetrate for several minutes on any stains or tough spots. When finished, allow the furniture to dry, and then replace any loose cushions. Source: wikihow.com
